Postpartum Depression and Anxiety In Dads

Depressed Dad and Concerned Mom with Baby

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that about 10% of fathers experience depression before or shortly after the birth of their child. While often associated with women, new fathers can face significant emotional challenges influenced by hormonal changes, relationship dynamics, and the pressures of parenthood.

Some of the more common symptoms in men include:

  • Anger, irritability or aggression.
  • Loss of interest in work or favorite activities.
  • Working all the time.
  • Being distant or withdrawing from family and friends.
  • Feeling frustrated, discouraged or cynical.
  • Feeling sad, hopeless or overwhelmed.

Some differences between male and female postpartum depression include:

  • 1 in 10 men experience postpartum depression compared to 1 in 7 women
  • Women usually see peak symptoms around months two to three while men usually peak later in the first year
  •  Men may express more anger and risk-taking behaviors, while women tend to show symptoms like crying, hopelessness, and guilt.

Diagnosing postpartum depression and anxiety typically involves a thorough psychiatric evaluation, focusing on a parent's mental health history and current symptoms. Each case is unique, but success has been found through:

  • Talk therapy
  • Support groups
  • Medication
  • Leaning on Support system
  •
